There are various treatments to improve vision in keratoconus. We can say that there are many effective solutions, especially surgical interventions. Apart from these solutions, which are especially effective in terms of stopping the progression of the disease, another curious part is whether the use of glasses in keratoconus disease will remain compulsory.
Is Wearing Glasses Compulsory in Keratoconus?
Let’s examine the situation by giving an example through a scientific research on this subject. In the scientific research, we see that 13 patients were followed up.
A 6-month observation was made in the research in which the patients who underwent crosslinking were put into corneal ring treatment after a 1-month period.
In the 6-month observation, patients were evaluated in 3 stages.
- First stage: To stop the progression of the disease by strengthening with Cross.
- Second stage: Utilizing the keranatural method to correct the corneal surface.
- Third stage: This is the stage that determines whether the patient will wear glasses or not. After the first two treatments, intraocular lens application is performed and a 6-month observation period begins for suitable patients.
After the third stage, which is passed after the disease stops progressing, patients are taken to a 2-year observation. As a result of this observation, it is determined that there is an improvement in visual impairment thanks to the intraocular lens.
In other words, if the appropriate conditions are met and the progression of keratoconus is completely stopped, it is possible to get rid of glasses with intraocular lens application. We can say that wearing glasses in keratoconus is not a compulsory solution. Of course, we should not forget that multi-stage treatment is used here.
