What is Lipiflow Treatment and How Does It Work?

Lipiflow treatment is a treatment method applied using a medical device developed to treat dry eye problems caused by meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). Meibomian gland dysfunction, one of the most common causes of dry eye, leads to a deficiency of the oil layer that prevents the evaporation of tears as a result of improper functioning of the sebaceous glands (meibomian glands) in the eyelids. This causes dryness, irritation and discomfort in the eye.

Let’s See How Lipiflow Treatment Works

Thermal Pulsation Technology: The Lipiflow device uses a special heat and massage system placed on the inner and outer surfaces of the eyelids. By applying gentle pressure and heat to the eyelid, the device aims to open the blocked meibomian glands.

Heat and Massage Application: A heating element is placed on the inner side of the eyelids, softening the hardened oils (meibum) in the meibomian glands. On the outer side, gentle pressure is applied to clean the glands and allow the oil to mix with the tears.

Treatment Duration: The treatment usually takes 12 to 15 minutes and is applied to both eyelids at the same time. During the procedure, the patient usually experiences a comfortable sensation and there is no significant pain or discomfort.

Effects: Lipiflow aims to open the blocked meibomian glands, normalising the fatty layer of the tear and relieving the symptoms associated with dry eye. This treatment aims to provide more lasting relief by correcting the underlying meibomian gland dysfunction underlying dry eye.

Results and Follow-up: The effects of Lipiflow treatment usually begin to show themselves within a few weeks and the effect of the treatment can last for several months. However, as meibomian gland dysfunction can be a chronic condition, it may need to be repeated at regular intervals in some patients.

Lipiflow treatment is recognised as an effective option, especially in patients with dry eye caused by meibomian gland dysfunction. Ophthalmologists can determine whether the patient is suitable for this treatment with a detailed examination.
